Establishing some objectives

The quest began by establishing a set of objectives. These objectives guided the search for options.

The objectives include:

* Proximity to good medical care
* Proximity to restaurants, hardware, wood, and quilting supplies
* Sufficient space (land)
* A positive environment for citizens
* Ability to custom design and build ground up.

.

We have some important needs to be near medical care. Many beautiful places were not candidates because of access to medical care.

We like to go out and be in the presence of others, so we looked for a place that was a place.

Having space is a luxury in Silicon Valley, so the possibility of having some space around us was very appealing. In Silicon Valley you begin with the lot lines and design inward with the space you have. Most houses look like lot lines minus the required setbacks. In other places, you can start from the inside and allow the exterior of the house to fend for itself.

A positive environment for citizens is complex, and includes taking steps to discourage crime, a desire for lower taxes, not more services, and a willingness to restrain government from establishing control over everything that is positive. We wanted a purple state, not one at either extreme.

We want to be comfortable, and we want to try to do it without consuming infinite resources. By building ground up we can engineer for thermal efficiency (insulation and air tightness). We want multiple HVAC systems (more air filtration capacity) and extreme thermal zones.

Our custom desires include:
* A mechanical space so cabling can easily be run without crawling and fishing.
* Allocation of square footage in specific ways (the Shop and Quit rooms get more).
* The ability to expand the Shop if the need arises.
* A View of the setting sun.
